1.888.861.7323 "The Quick and the Dead" (107 min, Rated R; 1995, Sam Raimi) The set for Sam Raimi’s only western depicts the least touristy destination imaginable—a dingy town with bad weather. Even worse, the local head honcho (Gene Hackman) likes to stage lethal duels in the middle of town. An excellent shot himself, he promises a jackpot to the last man standing. Or woman. Enter Sharon Stone as Ellen, the first female to try her trigger on Main Street. In leather pants and puffing a lean cigar, she affects a reprise of Clint Eastwood. Also new in town is The Kid, a cocky quickdraw played by Leonardo DiCaprio. Their motives for participating in the deadly game turn out to be more than financial. When the sun does shine over this town, cinematographer Dante Spinotti reveals it through clever camera apertures (as you might guess, bullet holes). This is a high-spirited, half-serious homage to the spaghetti western, probably best enjoyed with a sarsaparilla instead of a whiskey.Date and Time
