Banner Health performs Greeley’s first VELYS robotic-assisted knee replacement surgery

GREELEY, Colo. (Sept. 10, 2026) – Patients in Greeley now have access to robotic-assisted knee replacement surgery, with the first procedure recently completed in August 2026 at Banner North Colorado Medical Center by Hunter Aronson, DO, using the VELYS™ Robotic-Assisted Solution. The addition of the VELYS Robotic-Assisted Solution in Greeley gives patients access to technology that was previously available through Banner Health at North Colorado Medical Center – Loveland Campus.

“This gives us an option to keep Greeley patients closer to home, which is great,” Dr. Aronson said. “Some patients have already done their own research and come in asking about robotic-assisted knee replacement. Now, we are able to offer that technology here at North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley.”

VELYS is designed to assist surgeons during total knee replacement by helping them plan and perform precise, patient-specific bone cuts based on the patient’s unique anatomy. The technology uses a robotic-assisted device, a high-speed camera, optical trackers and data screens to support accuracy and real-time decision-making during surgery. While the technology is advanced, Dr. Aronson emphasized that the robot does not perform the surgery on its own.

“The robot is a tool, and it’s a good tool, but ultimately the surgeon is the one making the decisions,” Dr. Aronson said. “It helps us be more precise and consistent, but it does not replace the surgeon’s training, experience or judgment.”

Robotic-assisted knee replacement may be an option for many patients who need a primary total knee replacement. Dr. Aronson said some complex revision cases or patients with severe deformities may not be candidates at this point, though the technology continues to evolve.

The first VELYS case in Greeley also reflects Banner’s broader investment in joint replacement care across Northern Colorado through The Joint Replacement Center of Northern Colorado, led by Kirk Kindsfater, MD and supported by Dr. Aronson, Travis Wilson, MD and Daniel Heaston, MD.The center brings together fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons focused on hip and knee replacement, total shoulder and ankle replacements, advanced surgical techniques with emerging technology and coordinated care before, during and after surgery.
